Topic: Selections from Sefer Shoftim

Selections from Sefer Shoftim:  In this course, we will explore selected episodes from Sefer Shoftim with the goal of understanding some of the most puzzling biblical stories and how they connect to other parts of the Tanakh.  Please bring a Tanakh.

Topic: The World of Aggada

Though traditional yeshiva study often emphasized the legal sections of the Talmud, significant rabbinic voices such as Maharsha, Maharal and R. Kook, dedicated attention to the aggadic portions.  In this course, we shall explore the aggadic sections while utilizing the profound treasure trove of hundreds of years of rabbinic commentary.  This material opens up a world of religious and moral insight with ongoing relevance for the issues of today.

Rabbi Anthony Manning (Nov. 30-Dec.28 2011)    10:40-11:55 Topic: Who is a Heretic – an in depth examination of Maimonides’ 13 Principles of Faith

The course be in two self-standing parts at end of the fall and winter semesters and will look in depth at content of the Rambam’s 13 Ikarim and also examine more broadly the context in which they were written, how they were received by the Jewish world and the contemporary implications they have to the issue of ‘who is a heretic’.

Topic:  Structure & Significance of the Parsha

Each week we will examine the Torah portion that is read, from a textual and contextual perspective. We will explore the parsha and its structure as we pay attention to literary detail and devices. Through study of  classic and contemporary parshanim (Torah commentators), we will extrapolate significant messages to incorporate in our daily lives.
